Book Excerpt from The Fall of the Codex

Since I’ve been hard at work getting the edits done on The Fall of the Codex, I thought I’d share a fun *unedited* book excerpt! There are SO MANY SUPERPOWERS in this book, y’all, which was so fun to write. This excerpt gives you a little taste of that — plus, you get to see my OG couple, Grady and Kayla, do their thing again. Which is always good, right?

(Spoiler alert: If you haven't read The Secret of the Codex yet, there are a few light spoilers here, but nothing that will ruin the story. Just wanted you to be aware. 😉)

Enjoy!

The Fall of the Codex Book Excerpt

Grady’s voice sounded in Kayla’s head. We have to stop him, get him under control.

Agreed, Kayla shot back. But how do we do that without him stopping us?

Kayla’s eyes took in the burning man just few yards from her. She wished Justin was here—maybe he could fight fire with fire . . .

What was she thinking? She could totally fight fire with her power. And Grady’s.

Good idea. Grady nodded.

Maybe you can put out the fire with water?

Grady didn’t actually respond, but Kayla heard him agree anyway. Their telepathy was a really unconventional thing—but she’d never be ungrateful for it again. Not after losing it when she’d needed it most, only a month ago.

Grady called his power, called water from the ground. Kayla felt it moving through the earth, rising through the grass and finally spraying out above ground. He added in the water already in the sprinkler system and the water he generated from within himself, and soon the lawn was dowsed in a preternatural waterfall.

The water turned to steam around the young man, however, and he kept coming. Kayla screamed then threw up a wall of dirt and mud between the burning man and the two of them.

Water still sprayed around them, but the wall of earth moved to encase both of them in their own world. Kayla felt Grady let the water go, let it fall to the ground, and he wrapped his arms around her as she struggled to keep the wall up. The young man was up against the wall now, his liquid fire burning the earth outside, scorching Kayla’s skin. She called out.

“Kayla!” Grady jumped away abruptly as if he’d burned her himself. “Are you okay, sweetie?”

Kayla scanned her arms. She saw blotches of red in the exact places she felt the burning. This young man was burning her flesh without even having to touch her, and she didn’t know how to stop it.

Grady called his power again, but this time he gathered a ball of water in his hands, working with it until it started to solidify. He created two blocks of ice, a sort of frozen gel that fit his hands perfectly, and placed them on the burns on her arms. The cold instantly soothed the burning, but Kayla cried out despite it. The man was still coming, and she was still burning.

Grady created more icy gel as the burning snaked up her arm, but the searing pain was spreading fast. He would never be able to keep up.

Then the burning stopped.

Kayla blinked at the abrupt lack of pain then caught Grady’s gaze.

Grady blinked back then removed his hands. Her arms were still red, but they were healing quickly.

“What happened? Where is he?” Grady started surveying the area, but they were still encased in their opaque cocoon.

Kayla swallowed hard. “He’s gone.” With a heavy sigh, she let down their earth-made enclosure, and it crumbled to the ground around them. And just as she’d said, the young man was nowhere to be found. “Where did he go?”

They heard a sniffle behind them, and Kayla turned to see the young man’s mother sobbing beside her house. Kayla ventured over to her slowly, carefully, her hands up and open to the woman. “What happened? Where did your son go?”

The woman glanced up, her wide eyes matching her whispered words. “They took him.”

Grady chimed in. “Who?”

I just love all the emotion in this book. It will definitely take you on a rollercoaster of feelings, and you’ll probably want your tissues nearby, but it will be worth it, I promise. After all, I didn’t title it The Fall of the Codex for nothing…

I’m planning on a spring release on this one, so stay tuned for the official release date and more fun stuff! While you’re waiting, catch up on the series with the following books:
