7 Tips for Getting into the Writing Mindset

When we struggle to get our mindset in the right place to write, actually writing our book can seem impossible! I’ll go over some tips on how to get your head in the right place so you can write so much more easily.

SUMMARY

  1. Create a writing routine

Create a writing routine, something that gets you into that writing headspace. This could be anything, even a ritual of sorts, but create something unique to let your brain know it’s time to write!

  2. Meditate

Meditate, pray, or take some deep breaths to get in the right mindset for writing. Whatever helps your brain calm down (or ramp up, if you’re writing intense scenes) can help! Figure out what works for you.

  3. Say affirmations

Say a few affirmations about yourself and your writing to bolster your confidence — remind yourself that you can do this! (Because you totally can.)

  4. Grab snacks

Set yourself up with snacks and drinks so you don’t have to worry about hunger or thirst as you’re writing. Personally, a glass of water is a MUST-HAVE.

  5. Listen to your book playlist

Create a book playlist that reminds you of your story. You can even create a longer one that you write to (if you like to listen to music while you write) and a shorter one that almost serves as a “soundtrack” of sorts! I’ve found this is great for when you want to get back to your book but you can’t write at that particular moment.

  6. Get cozy — or in work mode

Get cozy and comfortable so you’re ready to write. Or maybe you need to get into work mode and dress up so your brain knows it’s time to work. Do whatever works for you!

  7. Reread your manuscript

Reread what you’ve worked on previously to get your brain back in your story. This works wonderfully for me, and I very rarely don’t know how to continue once I’ve read what I’ve written. Just resist the urge to edit! (Okay, maybe edit a little if you can’t seem to help yourself. I know I can’t. But don’t take too much time here.)

Remember: Writing a book takes time, but these tips can help you get in the right headspace so you can get your book done!
